Common Towing Questions
What is GVWR and where do I find it?
GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating — the maximum weight your RV is allowed to weigh when fully loaded (gear, water, passengers, everything). You'll find it on a sticker inside the RV door or in the owner's manual. It's the most important number for towing safety.
Why does my truck's tow rating matter so much?
Towing at or near your vehicle's maximum rated capacity is risky — especially in wind, on hills, or during emergency braking. Industry experts recommend staying at or under 80% of your vehicle's max tow rating to have a comfortable safety buffer. This tool uses that 80% rule to give you honest results.
What if my RV isn't in the results?
As long as you provide the GVWR, our tool can give you a compatibility result for any RV — even if it's not a brand we've seen before. The GVWR is what really drives towing safety, not the brand name.
Do I need a tow package on my truck?
Yes, for most RVs. Without a factory tow package, many trucks have a significantly reduced tow rating — sometimes 40% less. Always check your vehicle's specific rating with and without the tow package. Our results are based on vehicles properly equipped for towing.
